FLORAL DESIGN

ÉPOCA

We are pleased
to present…

There is a moment in every creation where nature, time, and intention meet. That is where ÉPOCA begins.

Founded by Stephanie and Ruben, Época is not simply a floral studio — it is a creative practice where flowers are treated as a medium of artistic expression, shaped by rhythm, seasonality, and a deeply intuitive understanding of space.

Their journey is rooted in both experience and sensibility. Before establishing Época, their time working abroad — particularly in France — refined not only their technical foundation, but also their ability to anticipate, adapt, and execute with precision under the demands of complex productions. Today, that structure exists quietly behind every project, allowing creativity to unfold with clarity and confidence.

At the core of Época lies a distinctive philosophy: nothing is random.

Every composition is intentional — guided by proportion, movement, and a careful reading of the environment in which it exists.

Their aesthetic is elegant, organic, and deliberate.

Not defined by a specific flower, but by the dialogue between textures, volumes, and negative space. A language where impact is achieved without excess, and where restraint becomes a form of sophistication.

Deeply influenced by the passing of time and the cycles of nature, Época approaches seasonality not as a limitation, but as a creative foundation. Each project is developed in response to what is naturally available, allowing the work to feel grounded, authentic, and inherently connected to its moment.

Their process begins long before the first stem is placed. It starts with observation — of the space, the architecture, the light, and above all, the emotional landscape of the couple. From there, floral design becomes a form of translation: turning atmosphere, identity, and intention into something tangible.

Whether working within intimate settings or large-scale environments, their approach remains the same — to create coherence. Installations are not isolated elements, but part of a broader composition where every detail contributes to a unified experience.

Behind the apparent effortlessness lies a highly structured and demanding process. Research, concept development, testing, logistics, and team coordination form the invisible framework that allows each event to unfold seamlessly. It is this balance between discipline and sensitivity that defines their work.

More than decoration, Época creates spatial experiences — environments that engage the senses and leave a lasting impression.

Not about the flower itself, but about the way it exists — in time, in space, and in memory.

Where flowers become the language of love…

Stephanie and Ruben, how was Época born, and what path led you here?

ÉPOCA was born from the desire to go beyond traditional floral decoration and to approach flowers as a form of artistic expression. From the beginning, our journey has been guided by aesthetic sensitivity, experimentation, and the desire to create floral experiences with a distinct identity. Over time, each project has helped establish ÉPOCA as a creative studio, where floral design is approached in an authorial, intentional, and emotional way.

Before founding ÉPOCA, we had professional experience outside Portugal, particularly in France, which was fundamental in shaping how we work today. That experience gave us a solid foundation, allowing us to anticipate challenges and develop a reliable method where every decision is made with speed and confidence in mind.

What personal memories have shaped your floral perspective?

Memories connected to nature, the passage of time, and the cycles of the seasons have played a defining role in how we perceive flowers. We have always been fascinated by ephemeral and imperfect beauty, and this relationship with time and natural gesture is directly reflected in our work and in how we conceive each composition.

I don’t have a specific childhood memory directly linked to flowers. What I always had was a strong connection to manual creation — visual arts, drawing, painting — and to nature. From an early age, I knew I wanted to follow a path connected to art.

Flowers came later, after watching a documentary about international floristry competitions. That was the moment I realised floral design could also be a form of artistic expression — one that naturally aligned with my love for nature and the arts.

How would you describe Época’s aesthetic signature in three words, and why?

Elegant, organic, and intentional.

In 2025, we reinforced this signature through a rebranding that reflects exactly how we work: a subtle, confident, and fluid identity, where every line has intention. Just like in our creative process, nothing is random — every choice is made to create harmony, convey confidence, and leave space for emotion. Our aesthetic seeks impact without excess, with a clear and coherent artistic direction.

Época communicates a strong connection to “seasonal flowers.” How do you balance seasonality with client expectations?

Seasonality is our creative starting point. We always work in dialogue with our clients, explaining the real possibilities of each season and proposing solutions that respect both the event concept and the nature of the flowers. We believe that adapting expectations to the season allows for more authentic, coherent, and visually strong proposals.

One of the most important lessons over time has been managing expectations — especially regarding timing and logistics. We never work with rigid arrival times, but rather with time windows. Unexpected situations can happen — in transport, with the team, or on the day itself — and what may seem like a small delay to us can be stressful for someone else.

The same principle applies to flowers: working with margin, flexibility, and trust in the process is essential to ensure a coherent and calm result.

What has been your most challenging project so far, and what creative solution did you find?

The most challenging projects are those on a large scale and within spaces with strong architectural presence. In these cases, the challenge lies in ensuring everything communicates harmoniously — from the floral design to the space itself, including table layouts, volumes, and visual flow.

Our creative solution is always to think of the event as a whole, where every element contributes to making the space shine in a balanced way, creating a fluid, coherent, and emotionally engaging experience.

What part of floral creation challenges and inspires you the most?

Concept development. Translating emotions, stories, and personalities into a floral language is both the greatest challenge and the most inspiring moment of the process.

It is where ÉPOCA’s identity truly takes shape.

Inspiration comes from everywhere. The world influences our work — every country, every culture, every way of living and creating. All of this is reflected in our floral language, even when not directly referenced.

Is there a flower you consider Época’s signature? Why?

We don’t identify with a specific flower. Just like our logo — which represents a flower in constant movement — our work is not tied to a fixed element. We prefer to think in terms of seasonal flowers, of each moment and each season. Our identity lies in the composition as a whole: in the dialogue between textures, volumes, movement, and space.

Today, we cannot point to a flower we would never use. Our tastes, like fashion and life itself, are cyclical. There were flowers we once rejected — such as carnations or daisies — that we now use with intention and appreciation.

We believe any flower can work when used with personality, creativity, and coherence within our aesthetic language. What matters is not the flower itself, but how it is integrated into the whole.

How do you balance technique, aesthetics, and emotion in a single arrangement?

Technique is the invisible foundation that supports the work. Aesthetics is the visual language we choose. Emotion emerges through gesture and intention behind each decision. When these three elements align, the result is a composition that is secure, fluid, and emotionally impactful.

What was the most unexpected request you’ve received, and how did you turn it into something beautiful?

Unexpected requests are part of the creative process and are seen as opportunities. Our focus is always to understand the intention behind the request and transform it into a coherent, elegant proposal aligned with ÉPOCA’s identity.

Our work thrives on mutual trust. We do not resonate with overly rigid processes or strict lists of demands. When couples trust our vision and creative direction, the result is always stronger than what was initially imagined.

What do you wish couples understood better about out-of-season flowers?

That working with out-of-season flowers involves logistical challenges, environmental impact, and higher costs. Rather than replicating references, we believe adapting the concept to the season allows for something more exclusive, conscious, and truly authorial.

For this reason, we never promise specific flowers in exact quantities. Instead, we ensure aesthetic coherence and solutions that honour the concept, even when availability changes.

What is the biggest myth about working with flowers you would like to break?

That it is simple or purely decorative work. Floral design involves technique, planning, physical endurance, creativity, and a great responsibility in creating memorable experiences.

What part of the profession is invisible but essential?

The unseen work: we always work with extra materials and flowers — vases, candle holders, foam, bases, and backup elements. Even when everything appears perfect, this margin allows us to respond quickly to any unexpected situation and ensure nothing fails on the day.

Research, concept development, testing, logistics, and team management — just like our visual identity, nothing is random. It is this rigor that allows the final result to feel fluid and natural.

Is there a dream project (a place, installation, or collaboration) you would still like to achieve?

We dream of creating large-scale floral installations in dialogue with the architecture of iconic spaces, especially in cities like Lisbon and Porto. Projects where floral design becomes an artistic gesture and a sensory experience, developed in collaboration with planners, photographers, architects, and creatives who share a refined and authorial vision.

I would also love to work again in France, where I began my journey. I dream of creating events in castles and iconic venues, but also of taking our work to other countries. Exploring new cultural contexts is part of how we envision ÉPOCA’s growth.

How do you imagine ÉPOCA in 10 years? Are there any new projects you are developing?

We envision ÉPOCA as a consolidated reference in contemporary floral art, with a strong identity recognised by both the public and the creative industry.

We want to continue growing consciously, significantly strengthen our digital presence, and reach a broader and more influential community.

In the long term, we see ÉPOCA as a creative studio that inspires, defines a visual language, and actively contributes to the evolution of floral design in Portugal.
